Friends for Dinner

When Becky and I were single, we both enjoyed hosting things at our places. I would host book clubs and dinners and she would host ping pong tournaments and game nights.

Our new place is great for hosting small groups of people, so we have tried to keep that tradition alive during marriage. Early on, we hosted another book club and we've had a few ping-pong tournaments out in our garage as well (when it wasn't summer). In December, we also hosted a fund-raising dinner to benefit refugees and raised $260. It was a lot of fun and we may do dinner for another cause this December too.

We had dinner a couple weeks ago with two couples that I know from my last ward who each recently had their first child. We talked a lot about the joys and pains of pregnancy, parenthood, and graduate school. We really appreciated their fresh perspective, honesty, and pulled pork sandwiches and cornbread.

Last night, we had dinner with a couple that Becky knows, and their smart 5-year old daughter. We made them Shepherd's Pie in exchange for a great dinner they provided for us at their place several months back. Again we benefitted from the sharing of their experience about parenthood and such.

We have been slow to make friends with new people in our ward congregation, but we had two couples over for kebabs on Independence Day. We'll probably do something like that again soon. I'd like to reach out to the parents of our primary kids.

One kind man from our ward made us dinner and brought it over a month or two ago. He is from the south and so he made us fried chicken, vanilla pudding, and all of the stuff that he would eat with his family for Sunday dinner. It was very generous of him and we hope to return the favor soon.

Getting together with other couples takes a bit of planning, especially if they have kids. It definitely requires a bit more effort that staying home and watching Netflix (also enjoyable), but its very worthwhile in the end.

I hope that if any potential new friends or old friends out there want to get together for dinner or some other activity, we can make it happen.

Fig. 1. We don't always set the table for dinner, but when we do we prefer to have friends over.
