Date night: Who needs babysitters?

During the past few months, we've had pretty good success taking Alex along with us when we go out for dinner on the weekend. In noisy rooms with lots of people, he usually just tunes everything out and goes to sleep (which is exactly what I would do if it were socially acceptable). Or, if he's not asleep, he just looks around curiously and flirts with the waitresses when they stop by (which is not what I would do if it were socially acceptable).

So anyway, this has been great because it enables us to go on believing that having a child won't stop us from being able to out and enjoy a night on the town.

Last night we decided to try taking this to another level. The experiment was not a major success.

It started out well. We made use of a gift card we had at the Cheesecake Factory and had some nice outdoor seating at sunset. With perfect Arizona weather and a slight April breeze, Alex quickly passed out as we shared chipotle pasta, beet salad and a slice of lemon mango cheesecake with raspberry sauce.

As we finished up, he began to stir and so we gave him a bottle, expecting him to pass out for good afterwards because it was about his usual bedtime. So then, we thought we'd push our luck and go over to the $2 movie theater next door and catch Rogue One while he slept.

He was pretty relaxed by the time we took our seats at the back of the theater. Apparently though, he really wanted to see the new Star Wars movie because he was wide awake by the time the previews finished. We ended up having to take turns with him out in the lobby during the first half an hour or so of the movie, where he was not a happy camper. Eventually he did fall fast asleep for good though. And then I did too (sorry Star Wars fans).

So anyways, apologies to our fellow movie-goers at the $2 theater last night if we disturbed anyone. Next time we'll keep date night with the kiddo restricted to just dinner.

Who doesn't want to sleep during Star Wars? This guy!
